Fashion is a fun and creative way to express who you are and how you would like others to perceive you. Whether it’s through a boho-chic look and a simple smart business attire, everyone has their own style. While you don’t necessarily have to have a love of fashion to find the style that suits you, sticking to a certain look is a great way to define yourself and create certain professionalism amongst colleagues and other business associates.

When it comes to fashion, it’s easy to feel lost or overwhelmed. With so many new trends, not just every year but every season, it can be hard to find what suits you and how to adjust your style. Like most women, you may have accumulated pieces over the years and your closet is stuffed with clothes that don’t really fit the same aesthetic. Luckily, you can still find the perfect style for you by working with what you already have in your closet!

Start With Your Closet

The first place to start is by going through what you already have. Take the time to go through your closet and find those pieces that make you feel good. Many women have a few pieces that make them feel beautiful, put together, and confident. Find those items of clothing and lay them out. Once they are all together, try to think about what they all have in common. Are the pieces bold? Are they all neutral colors? Do they seem more vintage? This will lead you to the style you are often most drawn to and the type of clothes that look good on you.

The same process can be done for finding the styles that don’t work for. Pull out the outfits that you don’t necessarily feel beautiful in or the items that you never wear anymore. Chances are, you have a few that has been collecting dust in the back of your drawers or closet. Those are great pieces to either give away or possibly try to find a way to make it work if you’re not willing to give up your clothes just yet.

Look for Inspiration

When you think of stylish, who do you think of? Whenever you’re looking through magazines or scrolling through social media, is there someone you think always looks good? One of the best places to look for a style that fits you is by looking for inspiration through the people we admire the most. A great place to start is your friends and family. Look at their style and what you like about how they dress. You can also spend time browsing through social media to see how both friends and celebrities dress. Check out their casual wear and their more formal choices to get an idea of what you like most.

Another great resource is fashion blogs. These blogs are filled with style tips, inspiration, and advice for beginners in fashion. Looking for inspiration will help guide you to a style that works best for you and one you most align with.

Collect the Basics

After going through your closet and looking for inspiration, you should have a good idea of what your style is. Now it’s time to put together a capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe is a set of basic clothes that you can easily mix and match to create different looks. The capsule wardrobe should be updated every three months to match the seasons. Your capsule should include your most classic and neutral pieces of clothing. This can be a pair of gray slacks, a little black dress, a smart blazer, or plain t-shirts. While the items can seem pretty simple, they’re actually a great foundation for showing off your unique style through exciting pieces and eye-catching accessories.

Don’t Be Afraid to Explore

With your capsule and your new sense of personal style, don’t be afraid to explore and mix things up. While you may have found the perfect style for you, it never hurts to mix things up every once in a while. Try out some new jewelry or a bold handbag. Finding fun items with vibrant colors, bold prints, and textures is a great way to discover new styles. Fashion should be fun and experimental, so take a little risk every now and then. You never know when your perfect style will change.
